Cultures and religions met each other in the city of Istanbul all throughout history. The city on the edge between east and west fitted well as background for the international congres on group therapy ‘On the crossroads of culture – where groups converge’. Individuals with a jewish or german of basque or palestinian or turkish or whatever background all brought their share of collective trauma, resulting from war and politics or natural disaster. And the nowadays islamic world is looking with ambivalent feelings to the West: jealous about power and succes and angry about defeats in the past. Text in Dutch language, ca. 700 words.

Gay refugees can obtain a residence permit if they are able to prove repression in their individual case. The author collects experiences of professionals in the juridical and health care fields, showing how applicants are discouraged and hindered to plead their case and to overcome the consequences of repression and trauma. The reader also presents an article on the counselling of gay refugees, and Peter Dankmeijer’s summary of a workshop for health care professionals working with gay refugees.

Man from Islamic countries and gay affirmative counselling
This article analyses possibilities of counselling men from Islamic countries with regard to the issue of homosexuality. This counselling is based on the principles of Gay Afirmative Psychology as well as on an attitude of equality between cultures within intercultural encounters, i.e. equality between Islamic and western culture.
How to understand clientsf problems in the light of their culture of origin, which is those of circum-Mediterranean Islamic countries, is explained along with presented complaints. Three elements are of importance: the contradiction between passive-female and active-male, the veiling of homosexual behaviour and the duties of Islamic tradition.

Residence permit as an antitoxin against hatred of the self
In many countries homosexuality is threatened with severe punishment. There is no protection for gays by authorities. Quite the contrary, (sexual) violence by police officers is a real danger. The social environment and even the own family might be after a gay person. This repression can cause flight. According to a crude estimate thousand gay refugees come to the Netherlands every year. Their self-image is often charged with doubt and selfhatred.

Summary
From woman to man – more and more.
It is difficult for homosexual women-to-men transsexuals to find a qualified therapist. With this in mind, the author takes a brief look at the discussion of this group’s position in society. In cooperation with experienced experts, the author retells elements of this group’s collective self-tale, using a narrative and gay affirmative perspectives. Important aspects for therapy concern are the transformations treatment at the Free University of Amsterdam, gender-identity versus sexual preference, the double-proof of masculinity, defence strategies, identity formation, and sexuality. The reflection ends with comments on the methodology of therapy with homosexual women-to-men transsexuals. Finally, a case is presented for illustration.

Summary
Homosexuality among men from muslim countries. Towards an integration of Transcultural Counseling and Gay Affirmative Psychology
A ‘multicultural’ society is not by definition tolerant of homosexuality. Muslim and gay lifestyles even seem to exclude one another. Still, some men in and from muslim countries try to integrate their homosexual preferences into their social and cultural patterns. The author of this article describes the various ways in which men from muslim countries attempt to integrate homosexuality into their concepts of self and society. Counselors are advised to take an attitude that is explicitly ‘gay affirmative’ without forcing the Western concept of homosexual identity upon them.

Summary
While looking for self-esteem and an identity as a gay man, problems with faith come up regularly. That makes them an issue in counselling as well, which is not for granted in counselling in general. The author discusses his experiences as a counselor concerning this question.
